Fruit of the Spirit Linocut Print
I explored the printmaking medium through the linocut technique. I was inspired by the fruit of the spirit, which is discussed in Galatians 5:22-23. My design focuses on shape, pattern, and unity. This project challenged me to create a detailed design while only using two colors created by positive and negative space.
I started out by creating a sketch inspired by the simple floral shapes found in folk style artwork.
And after lots and lots of mixing inks to create custom colors and running the plate through the press, I created 27 Fruit of the Spirit prints, no two prints looking the exact same!
I chose to print in three different colors, making sure the colors harmonized well together. The red prints are my personal favorite!
From there I drew a detailed color version of my sketch on Procreate in order to map out where I needed to carve away on my piece of linoleum. I also flipped the image so when I used transfer paper to put my sketch on the linoleum, it would be right side up!
